Local Gymnastics’ Achievements

Four local Waiouru Primary School students are a part of the Taihape Gymsports Competitive Gymnastics Team and have been recently competing in events around the North Island.

Hunter and Cullen Cross have both competed in the Hasting Comp 21-22 May and then again with Elaina Vine and Malhi McClay competing in Wanganui 28-29 May. For Elaina and Malhi this was their first competition for the gym season.

They are also more comps ahead and a lot more dedication and hard work to come.

Hastings Competition Results:

• Hunter (Level 2): 2nd Parallel bars, 2nd Vault, 3rd Rings, 2nd pommel, 2nd floor and 2nd Overall and part of team who got top gym award
• Cullen (Level 2): 1st pommel, 2nd Parallel bars, 3rd Rings, 3rd High bars and 3rd Overall and 1st Team overall and part of team who got top gym award

Whanganui Competition Results:

• Elaina (Step 1): 3rd Uneven Bars
• Malhi (Step 1): participation
• Hunter (Level 2): 2nd equal Rings, 2nd Floor, 3rd on Parallel bars, and 3rd Overall
• Cullen (Level 4): 2nd Parallel bars, 3rd Rings, 3rd High bar, 3rd Pommel, 3rd Vault, 3rd Floor, and 3rd Overall

We wish them all the best for their next competition which will be held in Palmerston North 18-19th June.

Waiouru Family Christmas Parade

A huge thank you to Alex McCarthy for organising and decorating our Christmas Float this year. Also thank you to Tweeddale’s Hire for loaning us the trailer and thanks to Kate Lee for being our ‘on board’ health and safety monitor on the day!

Below is a ‘one-stop-shop’ of information for new families moving to Waiouru, including key dates, enrolment information, and links to other sites with Waiouru Community information.

Key Dates:

• The first day of school is on Monday 1st February 2016 – we will begin the day at 9am in our learning street (through the double doors at the east end of the building.
• Our Office Open Day is on Friday 29th January 2016 – pop in to meet Kerry (our office manager) and Marama (our Principal); bring in your enrolment forms, order uniforms, purchase stationary, and have a tour of the school.
• Five Year Olds New To School Morning Tea is on Thursday 28th January 10am to 11am – bring your pre-schooler and their morning tea into school to meet Carie King our new entrant teacher.  Share a story, meet new friends, learn where all of the important stuff is in our school and take away the stress and worry of starting school for the first time.

WE NEED YOU!! – Waiouru School Working Bee.

Are you available for our Waiouru School Working Bee?

Friday afternoon 20th November and Saturday Morning 21st November.

If you are able to help on either of these days we would really appreciate it, especially if you could help project manage different projects for the day.

Our plan of action is as follows:
Friday afternoon – All students will be engaged in the prep-work for the actual working bee day on Saturday. Please send your kids to school in old, working clothes that do not matter if they get a bit dirty, or painty. They will be involved with working on their classroom projects, as well as weeding, tidying, touching up paint, and moving stones from the in-school gardens to the front gardens outside the gates.

On Saturday we are asking for teams of workers to help us with the following projects:

• Redoing our stony gardens with mulch – weed and tidy included.
• Cement and lay the Ninja Ratas’ path between the office and classrooms.
• Tidy and spruce up the Kiva (the concrete pit at the front, it’s actually a stage) with bright coloured paint or possibly a mural.
• Bulk plant our Koru garden with tussock and plants transferred from other gardens.
• Dig and plant the Minion’s Tyre Dragon.
• Build a mini fort on the large stump at the back.
• Dig and build a couple of jumps on Rangatahi’s bike track.
• Build a Sandpit – under purple shade sail.
• Transporting sand from the old Daycare to the new sandpit.
• Box in Mana’s garden.

Louise Tweeddale has taken on the role of co-ordinating and sourcing materials. What we need now are a few adults who will lead the different projects by telling Louise what is needed and managing the working parties on the day. We are so lucky to have such a close relationship with our Marae, and their endless support and encouragement.  Below is a video of our two senior classes giving a little back to our Marae as they tautoko the powhiri for the new Chief of Army.  It was a long and freezing day, and I am so proud of the manner in which our students conducted themselves.

Nathan Mikaere-Wallis Is Coming To Waiouru!

After months of planning and sponsorship sourcing I am pleased to announce that Nathan Mikaere-Wallis will be speaking at two educator focused, and one parent focused presentations on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th October 2015.

You are all invited to:

A Parents Evening with Nathan Mikaere-Wallis on Wednesday 14th October, 7.30pm to 9.30pm in the Waiouru School Hall.

Topic Coverage:

Using recent discoveries about the nature of how children’s brains develop and work, Nathan will share parenting strategies that work with this research. For this seminar Nathan will focus particularly on transitions for children – specifically the transitions of a parent leaving long term for work, or returning after a lengthy absence. The presentation is designed to be easy to understand and interactive – so feel free to bring your questions about the brain along!

Nathan is part of the Brain Wave Trust, and X Factor Education, Christchurch. He has been a lecturer at the Christchurch College of Education, lecturing in human development, brain development, language and communication and risk and resilience.  He is an amazing, dynamic speaker with a nack for translating complicated science into a format easily understood by all.

Nathan Mikaere-Wallis

At the Waiouru School Hall on

Wednesday 14th October 2pm – 6pm and Thursday 15th October 9am – 3pm

Nathan Wallis is a father of three & foster parent with a professional background in child counselling, teaching and social service management. Until recently he lectured in Human Development at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. Nathan is also a board member and senior trainer with the highly respected Brainwave Trust.

Presentation One (4 hours @ $20pp) – Wednesday 14th October 2pm – 6pm:

0 to 3 Years – The majority of the major discoveries about the growth and development of the human brain which led the 1990’s to be labelled the ‘Decade of the Brain’, were about the brain from conception to 3 years of age. From a neurological perspective this is clearly the most important time in your life for influencing your entire life span. Participants will explore with Nathan how this works and what it means for how we interact, nurture and educate our youngest citizens. We will explore the implications this has for early childhood/infancy and the type of environment that best facilitates the full development of the child’s potential. Nathan’s aim is to make this as jargon free and easily relatable to practice as possible.

Presentation Two (All Day @ $40pp) – Thursday 15th October 9am – 3pm:

Morning as above – 0 to 3 years

Afternoon 3 to 6 Years – With the huge emphasis placed on the development of literacy and numeracy in education, many people assume that the 3 and 4 year old is basically a little 7 year old, and a watered down more basic version of the 7 year old curriculum is appropriate. Its not.

This is a unique stage of development in which the child has unique needs specific to this age group. These needs relate to the development of social emotional skills, which as well as developing resilience, play a crucial role in the subsequent development of cognitive skills such as literacy.

Together with participants, Nathan will explore the research field that relates to this development, and how this impacts on our practice, interactions and relationships with young children. He hopes to infuse the session with humour and make the information easily relatable to your daily life.

Waiouru School is so lucky, we were fortunate to be chosen to be part of Z Waiouru’s Good in the Hood in May.  Thank’s to all of our community and their support we were able to raise $1070.00!  These funds go towards completing our school vegetable gardens, and subsidising transport to school events and class trips.  So thanks heaps Z Waiouru Team!!
